1. What is neverlost.com all about?

At its core, neverlost.com is an Online Trip Planning website that allows our customers to pre-plan trips for both business and leisure, in a way which allows that information to be transferred (downloaded) to the Hertz NeverLost navigation system.

The following sections give a brief overview of each of the main menu options:

Home

From the home page you can see highlighted content in our rotating banner section, jump straight to hertz.com to book your reservation, or start trip planning right away by typing in an address and hitting “GO.”

Plan

The bulk of your trip planning needs will be met in under the “Plan” tab. Within this section, you can route between two or multiple destinations using “Get Directions,” search for specific addresses or business locations using “Search,” browse our vast assortment of points of interest using “Browse by Category,” or find Hertz airport returns and local editions using “Hertz Locations.”

If you prefer to use Google Maps or Mapquest to search for destinations and build folders, we offer an “Import Tools” page which allows you to import your Google Places map or MapQuest My Map, converting it into a neverlost.com "My Favorites" file which can be used by the Hertz NeverLost.

You can manage your folders from the “My Favorites” page.

Popular Locations

If you’re not sure what you want to do, the “Popular Locations” section offers collections of interesting destinations all over the United States and Canada. Our “National Parks” page features hundreds of places to visit for the outdoor enthusiast. The “Explore” page offers fantastic coverage of major cities, tourist cities, and casino towns.

2. Creating a folder and having a "Current Folder"

What are “Folders” on neverlost.com, and how do they work?

Folders are collections of destinations; addresses, business locations, and points of interest. Each folder can hold up to 50 destinations, and you can have up to 50 folders (for a total of 2500 destinations). If you are a registered neverlost.com member, your Folders will be saved to our database so you can retrieve them at any time from any computer with access to neverlost.com.

Creating a new folder

When you first visit neverlost.com, an empty folder called “Default Folder” will be automatically created for you. You can rename this folder from the “My Favorites” page, under the “Plan” section in the main menu. You can also create a new folder using the instructions below.

There a couple of places in the website where you can create a new folder.

  1. You can click the down arrow (looks like an upside-down triangle) next to the name of your Current Folder in the top right portion of the website. Once this pop-up appears, simply enter a name for your new folder in the input field and click the “Create New Folder” button.
  2. On the “My Favorites” page, you can open the [Options] menu and select the “Create New Folder” option near the bottom of the menu.
  3. If you try to add too many destinations to a folder that is almost full, a pop-up will give you the option to save the destinations to a different folder, or create a new folder at that point.

Once you create a new folder, that folder will become your “Current Folder.”

How does the “Current Folder” work?

One of your folders will always be designated as the “Current Folder.” You can easily tell which folder is your current folder by looking in the top right area of the website. There will be a section in the dark blue bar which says “Current Folder:”, and just below that will be the name of your Current Folder. When you first come to the website the current folder will be “Default Folder.”

In most cases when you “Add” a destination to a folder, it will be added to the “Current Folder.” When adding a destination to a folder, you should see a little notification window appear above the “Current Folder” section showing a confirmation that the destination has been added, and you should see the destination count (in parenthesis next to the folder name) increase.

Changing your “Current Folder”

If you have more than one folder, and you would like to set a different folder as your “Current Folder” you can change it in a couple of different ways.

  1. If you click the down arrow (looks like an upside-down triangle) next to the name of your Current Folder in the top right portion of the website, a pop-up will appear listing all of your folders. Your Current Folder will be noted by the “**Current Folder**” text to the right of the folder name. Any other folders will have a link called “(Make Current Folder)” to the right. Clicking (Make Current Folder) will change the “Current Folder” to that particular folder.
  2. On the “My Favorites” page, select the folder you would like to be your Current Folder and open the [Options] menu. Select the “Make Current Folder” menu choice to change your Current Folder to the selected folder in the drop down menu.
  3. When you create a new folder, it will automatically be set as the Current folder.

3. Searching for an address or intersection

If you would like to search for a basic address or intersection, go to the “Search” page under the “Plan” tab in the main menu.

In the input field where it says “Enter Address or Search Terms,” type in the full address, with as much information as you know. Including the street/house number, street, city, state, and postal code (zipcode) will give you the most accurate results.

Here are some examples of address searches:

1234 Main St, Dallas TX
166 W Washington St, Chicago IL 60602

Here are some examples of intersection searches:

Parker Rd & Alma Dr, Plano TX
Park Ave & E 77th St, New York NY

You may also search for a City Center. In this case, you can search for the City and State only, which can then be added to your folder. (ex. “Longview, TX”)

Naming an address or intersection

If you would like to give your address a name, go to the “My Favorites” page. Here are a few ways to get to the “My Favorites” page:

  1. From any page of the website, click on the name of your Current Folder, in the top right area of the website. This will go to the “My Favorites” page with your Current Folder automatically opened.
  2. Click the “Plan” tab from the main menu, and then click the “My Favorites” icon in the submenu.
  3. Next to the Current Folder name in the top right area of the website is a triangle. Clicking this icon will open a pop-up showing all of your folders. Clicking on the name of a folder from this pop-up will go to the “My Favorites” page with that folder opened.

Once you have the “My Favorites” page open, click on the Pencil icon next to the address you would like to Edit. A pop-up will appear allowing you to enter a custom name for this destination, as well as enter a phone number.

4. Searching for business locations and points of interest

If you would like to search for a business location and points of interest, there are a number of ways to accomplish this:

The “Search” page

On the “Search” page, found by clicking the “Plan” tab in the main menu, you can enter the name of a business location or point of interest, along with a city and state for more accurate results.

Here are some search examples:

Banks, Dallas TX (this search will find all destinations in the “Banks” category around the city center of “Dallas, TX”)

Starbucks, Seattle WA (this search will find all Starbucks locations around the city center of “Seattle, WA”)

ABC San Francisco, CA (this search will find any business locations or points of interest with “ABC” in the name around the city center of “San Francisco, CA”)

Marriott 1234 Main St, Dallas TX (this search will find any Marriott locations near the address “1234 Main St, Dallas TX”)

If you’re on a different subpage within the “Plan” section, you can click the “Search” icon from the submenu to return to the “Search” page.

The “Browse by Category” page

Clicking the “Browse by Category” icon from the “Plan” submenu will take you to the “Browse by Category” page. This page allows you to see a list of all our supported categories, and search for those categories around a specific location.

Enter a starting location (address, intersection, or city center) in the input field, and then select a category from the drop down menu.

If you select “Restaurants” from the category drop down menu, a second drop down menu will appear allowing you to specify a cuisine type.

The “Hertz Locations” page

The “Hertz Locations” page works very similar to the “Browse by Category” page, only it is specifically designed to help you find Hertz Rent-A-Car locations.

5. Adding destinations to a folder

After a search has completed successfully, and search results are shown, you may add these destinations to your folder.

Next to each search result will be a (+) icon. Clicking this button will add that destination to your Current Folder. You will see a small confirmation message appear above the “Current Folder” section in the top right whenever you add a destination to your folder.

Once you have added a destination to your folder, the (+) icon will change to a small trashcan icon. This icon means the destination is now in your folder, and you can remove it by clicking the trashcan icon.

When multiple search results are returned, there will often times be an “Add All to Folder” button near the top of the search results. Clicking this button will add all of the search results to your Current Folder.

6. What is my "Download Code"?

Once you’ve registered an account with neverlost.com, you will be randomly assigned a 4 letter “Download Code.” This unique code allows you to wirelessly download all of your folders and destinations from neverlost.com to the Hertz NeverLost Gen6 system.

If you have a Hertz NeverLost Gen6 system in your Hertz rental car, you can enter your Download Code by following these steps:

  1. Select “Travel Guide”
  2. Select “My Favorites”
  3. Select “Download Code”

Once you’ve typed in your 4 letter code and hit OK, the system will begin downloading your folders in the background. When it finishes, you should hear a “ding” and a message “New” should appear next to your code. Select the code to open it and you should see all your folders from neverlost.com.

7. Downloading my Folders to a USB drive

On both our Hertz NeverLost Gen5 and Hertz NeverLost Gen6 systems, you can access your folders if they are saved to a USB drive.

To Download / Save your folders to a USB drive, click the “Download” button in the top right area of the website. On the “Download” page, you’ll see a section labeled “Option A:” which walks you through downloading your folders to a USB drive.

Note: It’s a good idea to always carry your "My Favorites" file on a USB drive, in case you are unable to get a Hertz NeverLost Gen6 system in your Hertz rental car.

8. Importing from Google or Mapquest

If you’re more familiar with using Google Maps to search for destinations, you can take “My Places” maps and import them into neverlost.com using the “Import Tools” page.

To find the “Import Tools” page, click the “Plan” tab from the main menu, and click the “Import Tools” submenu icon.

Google My Places

Once you’ve created a “My Places” map and saved some destinations to it on Google, you will be able to import those destinations to neverlost.com.

  1. On Google Maps, click the “My Places” button.
  2. Select one of your saved “My Places” maps
  3. Once you see the list of destinations for your “My Places” map, with the map name at the top, click the small chain (link) icon above the “EDIT” button.
  4. Copy and Paste the link from the first text field into the text field on the “Import Tools” page.
  5. Click the “Import…” button.

Once neverlost.com has processed the link, you will see a confirmation screen which informs you of what folders were created, and how many destinations each folder contains.

As Google uses a different method of storing destinations, it is possible some destinations will not import to neverlost.com properly. In this event, you will see a message informing you of any destinations we were unable to import.

MapQuest

Similar to Google Maps, you will need to “Save” some destinations to a “Map” on Mapquest.com before it can be imported into neverlost.com.

Once you have a “Map” with some destinations in it, click the “Link/Embed” button in the top right corner of mapquest.com. Copy and paste the link from the text field into the text field on the “Import Tools” page and click the “Import…” button.

Once neverlost.com has processed the link, you will see a confirmation screen which informs you of what folders were created, and how many destinations each folder contains.

10. Searching using the "NEAR" keyword

On neverlost.com, typing "NEAR" in the search field will allow you to find business locations, points of interest, or categories near a destination which already exists in your current folder.

As an example, say you've already added your hotel (Hyatt Regency Dallas) to your current folder. If you want to find restaurants near your hotel, go to the "Search" page.

Type "restaurants near" in the search field. As soon as you finish typing "near", a pop-up should appear below the search field showing all destinations in your current folder. You can click the "Hyatt Regency Dallas" hotel and it'll automatically submit the search, to find all restaurants near your hotel.
